Travel Stress

Americans experience growing road congestion every day and find it spreading from more heavily populated urban areas to large segments of the nation's highway system. Even America's great love affair with the automobile quickly turns sour when confronted with the stress and discomfort of long auto trip on what can no longer be described as the "open road."

Similarly, flying today is an increasingly frustrating experience. Our airports are near capacity and the nation's air traffic control system cannot be expanded further without immense cost and time commitment. Flying is usually fastest from point to point but is correspondingly stressful: security, crowds, fully booked flights, and lack of service all play a role. Even an expensive first class ticket does little to make the experience more pleasant.

A truck traveling from Boston to Florida typically needs about 54 hours to make the journey. How much longer will it take in just 5 years?

"…if transportation infrastructure is not rapidly improved, 'just-in-time' delivery will become 'sometime' delivery."
Francis X. Mulvey, Member, U.S. Surface Transportation Board
